The historic R.A. Brown Ranch is having a complete and total dispersal of their entire cowherd at the ranch in Throckmorton, TX. But don’t worry, the ranch is staying all in the family and the legacy will continue. Since 1895, this progressive family business has been producing some of the most superior cattle & Quarter Horses in the industry. They have also been a leader in successfully keeping the ranch in the family through five generations. “After much thought, Peggy and I believe the best way to help our children move forward with their ranching interests and God-given abilities is to hand them the reins and enjoy watching them pursue their dreams while we are enjoying our good health,” according to R.A. “Rob” Brown who has lived on the ranch his entire life.

Very rarely do you find a family with 118 years and five generations of registered cattle breeding experience. It is even more rare to have the opportunity to buy any female you want from the heart of such a program. In addition to more than 600 Angus, Red Angus and SimAngus bulls selling on October 9, 2013, the R.A. Brown Ranch will also disperse their entire herd of registered females. All red females sell on Thursday, October 10, and black females sell on Friday, October 11. In all, nearly 2,000 head of bulls, donor cows, mature cows, young cows, bred heifers and weaned heifers will be sold during this exciting three day event. Selling such a large quantity of females, buyers can expect to buy volumes of excellent females at very affordable prices. In conjunction with the sales, a dinner and celebration of R.A. Brown Ranch history is planned for the evening of October 9, following the bull and Quarter Horse sales.

The ranch covers 36,000 acres and was originally established by Robert Alexander Brown near Calvert, TX. His son, R.H. Brown, bought land in Throckmorton while he was the managing partner of a livestock commission company at the historic Ft. Worth Stockyards. His son R.A. Brown Sr. was thrust into management of the ranch before he finished college by the untimely death of his father. He held the ranch together through more than one severe drought, was a founding member of the American Quarter Horse Association and managed the ranch throughout his lifetime. R.A. “Rob” Brown Jr.took over at the young age of 29 after the surprising loss of his father. He leveraged everything he had to keep the ranch together and has continued building the legacy with his family ever since.

Rob has been a great leader in the ranching industry having served as president of three different livestock associations. He is also a true visionary as documented by his accumulation of many honors including Texas Ranch Round Up Trailblazer, NCBA Cattle Business of the Century, AQHA Hall of Fame as well as being named the nation’s top rancher with the Golden Spur Award. Peggy, his wife of 56 years, continues to be a vital part of their success. They worked hard to instill the values of hard work, honesty and sacrifice into their children as they brought them up on the ranch. Their progressive and practical approach led them to start a successful family succession plan over 30 years ago. As each child came back to the ranch, the Brown Family diversified and vertically integrated itself into all segments of the cattle business with registered cattle, commercial cow/calf, stocker cattle, wheat farming/grazing as well as involvement in the cattle feeding business.

This year Rob & Peggy decided to pass the ranch on to their four children: Betsy &Jody Bellah, Rob A.& Talley Brown, Marianne & Todd McCartney, and Donnell &Kelli Brown. Each of them plansto operate their portion of the ranch and continue the legacy. Their tremendous passion for the cattle business is expressed most clearly in their Mission Statement: “We are continually striving to improve the efficiency of converting God’s forage into great tasting, nutritious beef to better feed His people.” The Brown family gives much recognition to their loyal and dedicated employees who work daily with them in pursuit of the family’s goals.

The complete dispersal does not mean the end of the R.A. Brown Ranch name, brand or annual sale. Donnell and Kelli Brown, who have managed the family’s registered cattle for nearly 20 years, will rebuild the RAB registered herd using embryos and continue the tradition of providing top quality bulls, females and customer service at future R.A. Brown Ranch sales.
